FOUNTAINSIDE
GALLERY
WELCOMES
NEW ARTIST
JOE SEME
North Carolina Realist
artist Joe Seme paints landscapes and still lifes in
his marsh side studio in Wilmington, North
Carolina.
He is
known nationally for his incredibly detailed sporting
still life and trompe l’oeil paintings of “Americana”
and folk art antiques, sports memorabilia, including
golf, baseball, tennis, billiards and equestrian
subjects, hunting and fishing artifacts, old
advertising and antique toys.
An
admitted “pack rat,” his collections include
books, decoys, corkscrews, shotgun shell boxes, tin
toys, oyster cans, and other “stuff,” all of which
eventually becomes subject matter for his
paintings. Many of his paintings can take
several months to complete, and as Joe says, “To spend
that kind of time on something, you have to love
it.”
Trompe
l'oeil literally translates from French to
mean "fools the eye." Hard to paint, the trompe l'oeil
piece requires meticulous attention to detail on the
part of the artist. Proper sizing and every detail,
nuance of light and gradation of color must be
skillfully incorporated in order to make the
two-dimensional work appear to be
three-dimensional.
